Serie A sides AC Fiorentina and AS Roma are trying for Venezia and United States international midfielder Tanner Tessmann, according to a report from GiveMeSport's Tom Bogert.
Tessmann, currently captaining the United States at the Paris 2024 Olympics, helped Venezia achieve promotion last season back to Italy's top flight. Serie A champions Inter Milan previously reached an agreement with Venezia for a transfer, but Tessmann and Inter couldn't reach an agreement on personal terms.
Tessmann, who made 37 Serie B appearances last season, was an integral part of Venezia's promotional campaign scoring six goals and providing three assists. The 22-year-old is an FC Dallas academy graduate alongside other notable players like Weston McKennie and Ricardo Pepi.
Gianluca DiMarzio reported Fiorentia has already reached a deal with Venezia, but there's no agreement on personal deals yet between the player and club.
Fiorentina and Roma chasing Tanner Tessmann transfer
A step up in club competition would benefit Tessmann's development as the player continues to try and break into the senior national team before the 2026 World Cup. While McKennie, Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah and Gio Reyna are staples in the side, the incoming coach will want to have competition for places.
If Tessmann has a preference, Roma is playing European football next year in the Europa League. Fiorentina just missed out on qualification and has to go through the UEFA Conference League play-offs to secure a place in the lower competition.
Tessmann and the United States advanced to the Paris 2024 Olympics knockout stage, a needed result given the sour taste left in fans' mouths after USMNT's performance at Copa America. The team's group stage elimination led the United States Soccer Federation to relieve Gregg Berhalter of his head coaching duties.
Tessmann captained the United States in the quarter-finals against Morocco. The United States were eliminated by Achraf Hakimi and company from the competition outside medaling places. All eyes turn to the USWNT to see if Emma Hayes can deliver Olympic gold in her first major tournament.
