The United States Soccer Federation has made initial contact with former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp, according to a report from The Independent's Miguel Delaney.
USA fired head coach Gregg Berhalter on Wednesday, nine days after the men's national team was bounced from Copa America 2024 in the group stage. This summer was supposed to be a preview of growth and potential with USA hosting the 2026 World Cup. Instead, after losses to Panama and Uruguay, fans were boisterously calling for Berhalter to be replaced.
The U.S. Soccer Federation relieved Berhalter of his duties on Wednesday. Berhalter leaves the team with the highest winning percentage of any permanent USMNT coach. While this coaching search has to be done the right way, it also needs to be expedited with friendlies coming up early September.
The team has reportedly made initial contact with Klopp and identified him as a top target. How likely the signing is remains to be seen, but the former Liverpool man mentioned how strenuous and exhausting the past nine years have been. Managing an international team comes with its own challenges, albeit a different experience than coaching in the Premier League.
Klopp, however likely/unlikely the hiring is, would bring something invaluable to the team: a distinct and top tier style of play. Berhalter's side often looked out of ideas and stifled during this summer's festivities. For a team that is filled with talent playing at top European clubs, this summer was a massive disappointment. It was also the best opportunity to test themselves ahead of the World Cup.
Klopp's gegenpressing style would certainly bring a new edge to the men's national team, and one it desperately needs if it is to have a signature moment in two years time.
How likely is Jurgen Klopp to take the USMNT job?
Well, for starters, he won't be returning to the Premier League any time soon, if ever again. He promised to Liverpool fans that he wouldn't take another job in the country at the beginning of the year. Plus, he intended to take a break after announcing his departure. Though, plans could change if the right offer is made.
The opportunity to work with a talented generation of USA players is tempting, especially since they're the host nation for the upcoming World Cup. Also, Klopp would be reuniting with Christian Pulisic after a brief stint together at Borussia Dortmund.
Though, the likelihood of it all seems slim. Klopp is definitely more on the "Dream big," side of managerial targets.
