USMNT advance to the Nations League final after defeating Honduras 1-0

The United States men’s national team advanced to the Nations League final after unsung hero Jordan Siebatcheu scored a last minute winner against Honduras.

Nearly 87 minutes went by before any real action too place in the game. With every passing play, a penalty shootout loomed. But seconds before the final whistle, young USMNT player Siebatcheu scored the game-winning goal that handed head coach Gregg Berhalter his biggest triumph to date in charge of the national team. 

Despite entering the match as clear favorites, the USMNT never really took control of the match. Berhalter exited the match pleased with how his players dealt with the adversity on the pitch. 

"We’d like to have scored more goals and won more comfortably, but that's not reality. You’ll see all sorts of difficult results and difficult games [in Concacaf], and that's part of it," Berhalter said afterward. "These guys need that experience, so I’m really pleased with how the game went, really pleased that we had to go through this, because it's a great learning experience."

“It was the first tough, really official competitive game we’ve had,” forward Gio Reyna added “Just to show the resilience and the character of this group, to get a goal at the end was nice to see.”

The breakthrough moment by Siebatcheu stunned spectators. The match was only his fourth senior international appearance, delighting the coaching staff and teammates with the potential he displayed.

“That's why we put Jordan on, because we know he's a force on crosses. We know he battles in the penalty box, has good physicality, and he gave us the edge that we needed," Berhalter said.

Jordan Siebatcheu currently plays in the Swiss Super League for Young Boys, on loan from Rennes. The young striker signed with the Ligue 1 team in 2018 and made his debut in the 2018-19 Europa League group stage.

With the Young Boys, Siebatcheu recorded a total of 15 goals and four assists across all competitions that inspired the team to exercise the buy option on his loan contract effective July 1st, 2021.
