Virgil van Dijk explains who is to blame for Liverpool's draw with Man Utd

Virgil van Dijk believes Liverpool only have themselves to blame after failing to see off Manchester United on Sunday.

Despite dominating on the stats sheet, Liverpool failed to make their chances pay and were held to a 2-2 draw after Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo both netted stunning goals.

Fernandes' long-range strike came from a poor pass from Van Dijk's centre-back partner Jarell Quansah, but the Dutchman declined to blame Quansah and insisted the entire team must take responsibility.

"We should've been 2-0 up at half-time," he told Sky Sports. "We had them under control.

"It's just a shame. It definitely feels like a loss at this point. We were wasteful with our chances and we gave them a lifeline.

"Unfortunately individual mistakes can happen in the game, but we still had so much time to put it right but we were in a rush. We were losing too many balls and too many challenges in midfield."

Asked whether he believed Liverpool had contributed to their own downfall against United once again, Van Dijk admitted: "100%. It feels like the FA Cup game again.

"I think the first half was better because we created chances and we limited their chances. But we know that one moment can change the game if we don’t finish [chances] off and that's the disappointing part.

"We should've won today but the reality is that we didn't. Now we have to make it up in all the other games."

Liverpool must now switch their attention to the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Atalanta on Thursday before they return to Premier League action with a visit from Crystal Palace on Sunday.
