West Brom 1-1 Manchester United: Player ratings as lacklustre United held by Baggies

Manchester United toiled to a disappointing 1-1 draw on the road at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon.

West Brom needed just 90 seconds to open the scoring through Mbaye Diagne, who rose highest to power home Conor Gallagher's cross. United were sluggish for the entirety of the first half, but a magical volley from Bruno Fernandes had the teams tied up at the break.

United woke up after half-time and thought they had won a penalty on the hour mark when Harry Maguire was hauled down, only for the decision to be overruled by VAR. United kept coming, needing Sam Johnstone and Darnell Furlong to clear off the line, but it was Diagne who had the best chances of the second half.

Johnstone tipped a Maguire header onto the post in basically the last action of the game, ensuring the points were shared in this one.

WEST BROM

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Sam Johnstone (GK) - 7/10 - Had the kind of quiet afternoon he'd have wanted but was completely powerless to keep out Fernandes' volley. Made an outstanding save to deny Maguire in stoppage time.

Lee Peltier (RB) - 5/10 - Mostly solid but was nowhere to be seen on the cross for United's equaliser. Left at half-time with an injury.

Semi Ajayi (CB) - 7/10 - Did a great job of neutralising Cavani and marshalling the West Brom back line. Always seemed to be in the right place to clear the ball.

Kyle Bartley (CB) - 6/10 - Fell asleep for the equaliser and probably should have been there to stop Fernandes.

Conor Townsend (LB) - 7/10 - Had to work hard to cope with Shaw's advancing runs but clearly relished the challenge.

2. Midfielders

Okay Yokuslu (DM) - 8/10 - Started his first Baggies game and injected some real quality. Had to get scrappy at times but shielded the back four with real energy and enthusiasm.

Matheus Pereira (RM) - 5/10 - Was responsible for creating from set pieces but his delivery was just so poor. Didn't offer his team anything from free kicks or corners.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles (CM) - 5/10 - Seemed far too lethargic and was caught napping a little too often. Wasted a fantastic counterattack with a shocking cross midway through the second half.

Conor Gallagher (CM) - 8/10 - Kicked the game off with a corker of a cross for Diagne and then spent the rest of the game throwing his body about and unsettling United's midfield with his energy.

Robert Snodgrass (LM) - 7/10 - Buzzed around with energy, combining with Townsend to cause real problems down the left.

3. Forward

Mbaye Diagne (ST) - 7/10 - Had a quiet game generally but was completely dominant whenever he was involved. Bullied United's back line when given the chance to do so and probably should have had two or three.

4. Substitutes

Darnell Furlong - 6/10

MANCHESTER UNITED

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

David de Gea (GK) - 6/10 - Had no chance with the Diagne header but did incredibly well with a double save to stop the striker later in the second half. Can take no blame for this result.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) - 5/10 - Looked uncomfortable when asked to go forward and didn't really make up for it in defence. Snodgrass caused him too many problems.

Victor Lindelof (CB) - 5/10 - Was eaten alive by Diagne for the opening goal and couldn't cope with the striker's physicality. A real mauling.

Harry Maguire (CB) - 7/10 - United's best attacker for most of the game. Charged forward with regularity to try and kick-start United's attacks and give the midfield the kind of oomph they were lacking. Threw in some great body feints for good measure.

Luke Shaw (LB) - 7/10 - His impressive eye for an assist led to the United equaliser and his desire to get in the box made it clear he wanted a goal of his own, but definitely looked like a defender when the ball came towards him in the box.

6. Midfielders

Scott McTominay (DM) - 6/10 - Wasted as a DM in the first half, McTominay returned to his box-to-box style after the break to give United a new dynamic.

Fred (DM) - 5/10 - Had no defending to do and instead spent his time passing the ball forward, which went about as poorly as you'd expect.

Marcus Rashford (RM) - 6/10 - Looked uncomfortable out on the right but started to wake up once Martial was brought off and he was switched back to the left.

Bruno Fernandes (AM) - 7/10 - Had the most average first 44 minutes you'll ever see but decided to channel his inner Zidane for the equaliser. United's hero yet again.

Anthony Martial (LM) - 4/10 - Didn't really look like he wanted to be there. Every movement came a few seconds too late and looked more like a passenger at times.

7. Forward

Edinson Cavani (ST) - 5/10 - Not the best 34th birthday for Cavani, who was marked out of the game. Showed some class with his movement at times but his touch and final ball was lacking.

Mason Greenwood - 6/10
