What Dayot Upamecano will bring to Bayern Munich

Dayot Upamecano will officially join Bayern Munich in the summer, after the Bundesliga champions triggered his buyout clause to lure him away from RB Leipzig.

The French defender has been one of German football's leading lights since arriving from Austria in 2017 and Leipzig had been desperate to hold onto him - so much so they agreed to sell him on the cheap if he agreed to stay at the club for the current season.

Unfortunately for Julian Nagelsmann, that has resulted in their title rivals pouncing to add one of the most exciting players on planet earth to their defensive ranks.

What was his release clause?

Upamecano has already emerged as one of the best defenders on the planet, but Bayern have landed him for a reported £38m, thanks to a release clause in his contract.

The contract extension he signed last summer - designed to see off interest from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and others - was on the condition he would be allowed to leave in the summer of 2021 for a fraction of his transfer value.

A clause was inserted that meant he would be granted an exit provided any interested club coughed up £38m.

Bayern faced reported competition from Liverpool and Chelsea this time around, but the European and world champions were always the player's preferred choice.

What are his key attributes?

Despite being roughly average in height for a centre back, Upamecano seems towering. That's because he is built like a brick sh**house and virtually never loses a duel - either on the ground or in the air.

Off the ball, he is as aggressive as they come, but he is also an exceptional passer, registering an 87% success rate for Leipzig this season. That's despite pinging a fairly high number of long balls into Yussuf Poulsen, Alexander Sorloth and Christopher Nkunku.

He also covers ground at a remarkable pace for someone verging on 200lbs. So yeah, he's pretty well rounded as defenders go.

Any weaknesses?

It has previously been reported that Liverpool had reservations over Upamecano due to his tendency to fly into challenges - something that comes as a consequence of his football education under the Red Bull umbrella.

He constantly looks to try and win the ball back and as such can be dragged out of position, which isn't usually a problem considering he normally wins the ball, and can get back quickly on the rare occasion that he doesn't.

Playing for Bayern, though, in a more reserved and controlled tactical system than he is used to, he may need to be reined in a little.

How good is he on FIFA 21?

The big question, and the answer is 'very.'

Per Sofifa, he is rated at a modest 81, and has the potential to go as high as 90.

Base ratings of 89 for strength, 87 for pace and 84 for tackling. Yikes.

Where does he fit in at Bayern?

It bodes well for the 22-year-old's development that he is staying in the league in which he rose to prominence. Especially since there won't be much of an adjustment period: with David Alaba set to leave Bayern this summer and Jerome Boateng's future yet to be resolved, he may need to hit the ground running fast.

Starts won't be guaranteed, with Niklas Sule on top of his game and Lucas Hernandez available as a centre-back option now Alphonso Davies is back into the swing of things, but Upamecano will be expected to cement a role for himself in the first-team from the off, given how impressive he has been for Leipzig over the past few seasons.

That is unless they go out and sign another big name centre back, which is very plausible considering the lack of depth beyond their established options.
