Matthew McConaughey is one of the most famous Texas Longhorns fans in the world, but in recent years, he has been at the epicenter of soccer in his home state.

Matthew McConaughey's love for football has competed with his emerging passion for soccer ever since he married his Brazilian wife, Camila Alves. He credits her with his interest in the world's most popular sport, and over the years, he has become more and more determined to help grow soccer in Texas.

“As we travel the world, we have found and love the game of soccer," McConaughey told CNN Sport, "because it’s the one game they can play wherever: in the city, in the country, from New York to Timbuktu.”

As of 2021, professional soccer players can now play soccer in Austin for McConaughey's MLS club.

What soccer team does Matthew McConaughey own?

Matthew McConaughey is a minority owner of Major League Soccer team, Austin FC. The Oscar winner invested in the club in 2019, two years before the Verde debuted in the league, and has quickly become one of the faces of the brand.

The actor's passion for Austin FC's potential is off the charts, and it goes beyond just a superficial love for the game.

“Austin already had a fever for the game of soccer," McConaughey told CNN Sport. "I would argue that the snapshot of Austin FC may represent the international game – look and feel, culture, fan experience – it has the chance to represent that more than any other team in MLS.”

The UT alum shows his support for his team whenever he can, even if it means wearing a green suit and playing the drums to hype up the crowd before a match.

Under McConaughey, the Verde had a dream second season in the MLS, reaching the 2022 MLS Cup Conference finals, where they suffered a 0-3 defeat to the eventual 2022 MLS Cup winners, LAFC.

McConaughey dubbed soccer "the sport in the new America," and if his club keeps drawing huge crowd at the Q2 Stadium, then it just might become (almost) as popular as football in Texas.
