Who can win the quadruple? The trophies Liverpool, PSG and European giants need
- Celtic's Lisbon Lions are the only team to win the quadruple
- PSG and Liverpool among clubs aiming to replicate Jock Stein's side
- Other sides from across Europe are in contention to win four trophies this season
While multiple teams have claimed four trophies in a single season, only one can truly say they completed the ultimate quadruple.
The legendary vintage of Jock Stein's 1966/67 Celtic can get lost in the sands of time, but the homegrown Lisbon Lions were one of a kind. While Pep Guardiola's Barcelona and Hansi Flick's Bayern Munich can each claim their respective places in history with unofficial quadruples, Stein's Celtic effectively completed the sport after downing catenaccio adorers Inter in the 1967 European Cup final.
A come-from-behind triumph in Lisbon meant Celtic had claimed every major title available to win that season, adding continental glory to the Scottish top flight and two domestic cups, thus completing the 'true' quadruple.
We've seen a handful of treble winners since, but no side has been able to claim four pieces of major silverware. In 2023/24, a whole host of teams are still in quadruple contention.
Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp has made a mockery of Liverpool's supposed transition year. After finishing a disappointing fifth in the Premier League last season and thus failing to qualify for the Champions League, the Reds are in a similar position to where they were at this stage in 2021/22.
Liverpool ended that season with two domestic trophies after falling agonisingly short in the Premier and Champions League.
Man City will undoubtedly have a thing or two to say about their title quest and the Cityzens represent their most likely obstacle in the FA Cup after the Reds beat Arsenal in the third round. Liverpool have already got the ball rolling by overcoming Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.
Despite enduring a couple of hiccups in the group stage, Klopp's side are also favoured to win the Europa League. Liverpool advanced into the round of 16, thus avoiding the play-offs, by winning Group E.

Manchester City
Last season's treble winners can't complete the quadruple after losing to Newcastle in the third round of the Carabao Cup. However, given that they've already secured the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup this season, Man City have a great shot at winning a watered-down quadruple.
Pep Guardiola's side have overcome their annual stumble and are hunting down Liverpool at the Premier League summit with Kevin De Bruyne now back in action.
A kind round-of-16 draw means they're almost assured of a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals after they waltzed through Group G. They also overcame Tottenham in the FA Cup fourth round and are favourites to retain their crown.

Paris Saint-Germain
Early blips for Nice and Monaco in 2024 mean PSG haved raced clear at the top of Ligue 1. Luis Enrique is poised to claim the French league title at a canter despite overseeing a summer of drastic personnel changes.
Crucially, Kylian Mbappe remains in the French capital (for now) and he'll be leading the club's quest to claim multiple pieces of silverware. PSG's first of the Enrique era arrived via the Trophee des Champions as they overcame Toulouse 2-0 in their first outing of the new year.
They've endured two years without a Coupe de France success, with PSG's 2023/24 domestic cup campaign recently getting underway. A tricky quarter-final clash with Nice beckons.
While domestic silverware is important for Enrique at the start of his project, PSG's season will once again be defined by their performance in Europe - albeit less so compared to previous campaigns. The French giants scraped through the 'Group of Death' in second but are well-placed to make the last eight having overcome Real Sociedad 2-0 in the first leg of their round of 16 tie.

Benfica
Roger Schmidt's Benfica enjoyed a stellar 2022/23 campaign that only returned a Primeira Liga title. The Portuguese giants perhaps haven't dazzled as they did during the first half of last season, but they're nonetheless still in play for four pieces of major silverware having lost to Estoril on penalties in the Taco de Liga semi-finals.
Benfica overcame Porto in the Supertaca Candido de Oliveira last August to kick-start their campaign, and they've progressed into the latter stages of the Taca de Portugal where title rivals Sporting CP await.
Sporting CP are going to take some overcoming in the league, but Schmidt's side have kept pace thus far. A dire start to their Champions League group means they'll be competing in the Europa League knockouts, but they advanced into the round of 16 after toppling Toulouse.

Rangers
Both Celtic and Rangers have claimed the treble numerous times, but the quadruple has been a bridge too far for both Scottish behemoths since the Lisbon Lions.
This is far from a vintage Rangers outfit, but a prosperous campaign is on the horizon at Ibrox with Celtic recently being usurped at the top of the league table. The Gers have already triumphed in the Scottish League Cup, and they're bound to enjoy a deep run in Scotland's primary cup competition.
A strong end to their Europa League group stage means they progressed straight into the round of 16, and very few teams will fancy a night under the lights at Ibrox.
