Who will win Ligue 1?
By Tom Gott
We haven't seen a Ligue 1 title race like this in a long time.
France has been Paris Saint-Germain's playground for a decade, but not only are Mauricio Pochettino's side facing an uphill battle to retain their crown, they must hope results go their way on the final day of the season if they are to usurp table topping Lille.
Lyon can no longer win the title - although they can still finish second with a miracle goal difference swing - but Monaco are not out of the running for securing Ligue 1 title. However, they do are in need of a six-goal swing if their dreams are to come true.
Here's how things stand, who Lille, PSG and Monaco have to play, and where the title is likely to end up.
Lille - 80 points
Remaining fixture: vs Angers (away)
It's in Lille's hands. Win and they'll get the title for the first time since 2011.
They are heavy favourites against 12th-placed Angers, who have won just four Ligue 1 games in 2021 and are on a run of six defeats in their last seven. On paper, this title should already be Lille's.
However, if you're looking for a fun storyline, here you go - Angers are just one of three sides to hand Christophe Galtier's side a defeat this year. Surely not?
PSG - 79 points
Remaining fixture: vs Brest (away)
With a superior goal difference to Lille, PSG could technically win the title with a point against Brest - assuming Lille fall to a shock defeat against Angers.
Pochettino's men will expect to win all three against 16th-placed Brest, but the minnows will be fighting for their lives as they could still fall into the relegation play-off spot if results elsewhere go against them.
A victory should be on the cards for PSG, who will have to hope that Angers can do them a favour.
Monaco - 77 points
Remaining fixture: vs Lens (away)
Only a miracle will bring the Ligue 1 title back to Monaco.
Mathematically, they're still in the race, but they would need both Lille and PSG to lose on top of an emphatic victory over Lens. A six-goal swing with Lille would bring them the title, but please do not put your money on that.
If Monaco win this title, it will go down in history as the most surprising moment of all time.
So who will win Ligue 1?
This is Lille's title to lose, and they will only have themselves to blame if they are unable to overcome Angers. PSG will likely push them to the very end, and the threat of Monaco can't be ignored just yet. But there is no reason for Lille to lose this, they're significantly better than Angers and are in this position for a reason.
Mentality, they have been strong all season, while Pochettino's PSG have endured numerous lapses in concentration at big moments. For once it looks like too little, too late for them.
