Wolfsburg 2-3 Bayern Munich: Player ratings as magic Musiala inspires thrilling win
By Max Parsons
A glorious first-half brace from Jamal Musiala, sandwiched either side of an Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting strike, earned Bayern Munich a 3-2 win over Wolfsburg in a pulsating Bundesliga clash.
Die Roten broke the deadlock after 15 minutes when Alphonso Davies drove brilliantly into the box before laying the ball off to 18-year-old Musiala, who somehow wiggled his way through a couple of challenges before firing past Koen Casteels.
Bayern's lead was then doubled nine minutes later in comical fashion, when Choupo-Moting punished Casteel's calamitous patting down off David Alaba's cross.
The hosts got back into the game when Thomas Muller's sloppy pass eventually led to Wout Weghorst clinically curling past Manuel Neuer, only for Musiala to immediately loop a wonderful header home for his sixth Bundesliga goal of the season - a record for a young player.
Maxi Philipp's goal ten minutes after the break threatened to burst Bayern's winning bubble, but Hansi Flick's side survived late pressure to inflict a first home defeat of the season on Wolfsburg. The win restores Bayern's seven point cushion at the top of the Bundesliga, which was aided by RB Leipzig's inability to beat TSG Hoffenheim on Friday night.
Here's how Bayern's player ratings shaped up...
Bayern Munich player ratings
1. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Manuel Neuer (GK) - 7/10 - Clinical finishing gave him little chance of keeping either goal out, but the captain made one incredible and crucial stop in the second half.
Benjamin Pavard (RB) - 7/10 - Typically calm, collected and effective in possession, rarely giving away the ball when getting his head up.
Jerome Boateng (CB) - 6/10 - Calm on the ball, Boateng maintained a pass accuracy of 89% - but did make a series of rash challenges to give away silly free-kicks.
Lucas Hernandez (CB) - 6/10 - Was quick to get around and cover Boateng when needed, and was typically calm in possession.
Alphonso Davies (LB) - 8/10 - Tracked back well to keep things quiet on his side, but was mainly involved going forward. Really dangerous around the box and registered a lovely assist for Musiala's first.
2. Midfielders
Joshua Kimmich (CM) - 6/10 - Recycled the ball nicely and did well to effectively drive the ball out of deep positions. Unusually quiet.
David Alaba (CM) - 7/10 - Was brilliantly energetic and covered a lot of ground to make seven ball recoveries. Made some brilliant surging runs but was largely ineffective when the ball came to him in advanced areas.
Thomas Muller (AM) - 6/10 - Looked completely off the pace all game, playing sloppy passes and often losing possession - notably making the error that led to Wolfsburg's first. In typical Muller fashion, however, he did manage one moment of quality to get his 17th assist of the Bundesliga season for his side's third.
3. Forwards
Leroy Sane (RW) - 2/10 - Absolutely woeful. Should have had a hat trick but skewed three glorious chances off target and couldn't really get into the game at all. Showed no menace, no end product and very little quality.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (ST) - 7/10 - Looked sharp from the get go and had some really nice touches on the ball. Showed great reactions to control and score from Casteels' error.
Jamal Musiala (LW) - 9/10 - Looked his side's main danger throughout, scoring a magical brace in the first half. The star attraction.
4. Substitutes
Kingsley Coman (LW) - 6/10
Javi Martinez (CM) - 6/10
Tanguy Nianzou (CB) - N/A
