WSL goals of the week: gameweek 15
By Ali Rampling
Proceedings started to hot up at the WSL summit during gameweek 15, as the league's top two met at Kingsmeadow on Friday evening, before the Manchester derby took place on Sunday afternoon.
Results have left the title race and the battle for the Champions League tantalisingly poised as we head into this week's international break.
There were 13 goals across the six WSL fixtures in gameweek 15 - let's take a look at the pick of the bunch.
5. Freya Gregory - Leicester 3-0 West Ham
Leicester claimed a vital three points in their bid to avoid the drop as they ran out 3-0 winners over West Ham.
Freya Gregory applied the finishing touch after Shannon O’Brien turned on the afterburners to seal the victory and lift her side eight points clear of the WSL drop zone.
4. Emily Gielnik - Everton 0-2 Aston Villa
We love a good assist, and Emily Gielnik's opening goal during her side's 2-0 victory over Everton was all about the acrobatic set up from Jill Scott.
When you think of the England midfielder, her hard work, tireless energy and ability to canter across every blade of grass are normally what springs to mind.
She will now be welcomed into the bicycle kick club with open arms by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Gareth Bale and Wayne Rooney after teeing up Gielnik in sensational style.
3. Kayleigh Green - Brighton 4-1 Reading
Kayleigh Green netted twice as Brighton emphatically ended their winless run - and her smartly taken second was the pick of the bunch.
The Welsh international peeled off the Reading backline, before finding the bottom corner with the outside of her right foot.
2. Amalie Eikeland - Brighton 4-1 Reading
The old shot or cross conundrum from Amalie Eikeland preserved a little bit of dignity for Reading at the death.
The goal two minutes from time was just a consolation as Kelly Chambers' side endured a difficult day at the office - so we'll call it a shot to give Royals fans something to celebrate this weekend.
1. Caroline Weir - Manchester City 1-0 Manchester United
Three WSL Manchester derbies on home soil for Caroline Weir, three stunning solo goals. Her soaring drive from range at the Etihad Stadium in 2019 would take some beating, so the Scotland international provided more of a cheeky number in the 2021 derby.
She popped up with something even cheekier to seal all three points for Manchester City on Sunday. The absolute nerve to even try it again, let alone pull it off. And just how does she get such distance and accuracy with a chip???
Weir's reaction to her goal is also something to savour. She actually winces apologetically at just how good it is.
