WSL team of the week - gameweek 21

The penultimate gameweek of the 2021/22 WSL season was played on Saturday and Sunday, with all 12 clubs involved as the campaign prepares to reach a dramatic conclusion.

There were handsome big wins for both Arsenal and Manchester City as they chase down Chelsea and Manchester United respectively. United also enjoyed a convincing, if slightly smaller victory, while Chelsea just about scraped by an increasingly resilient Birmingham.

GK: Demi Lambourne (Leicester): Made three saves during her side's 0-0 draw with Reading, including one in stoppage time to preserve the point, edging closer to confirmed safety.

RB: Faye Bryson (Reading): Regularly won the ball back throughout for the Royals against the Foxes, contributing to an overdue run without a clean sheet.

CB: Maria Thorisdottir (Man Utd): Put her body on the line with big blocks - one took her right off her feet - that gave United the platform to record a clean sheet.

CB: Leah Williamson (Arsenal): Continued to play the deep-lying play-maker role so well. Found the gaps between Aston Villa's lines for the Gunners' first two goals of their 7-0 rout.

LB: Steph Catley (Arsenal): Put in a fine performance and was always looking to get forward. Linked up particularly well with Katie McCabe in that sense.

RM: Martha Thomas (Man Utd): Exorcised last week's demons by scoring her team's earlier opener against West Ham and also forced the subsequent own goal with a run and cross.

CM: Caroline Weir (Man City): Exuded class once more as her team marches towards the final Champions League place. Came away from the weekend with two assists and a goal.

CM: Jackie Groenen (Man Utd): Her best qualities aren't always reflected in the stats, but United's comprehensive win was underpinned by her outstanding performance.

LM: Lauren Hemp (Man City): Marked her 100th City appearance with a typically electric performance, contributing a goal and assist in the second half.

ST: Vivianne Miedema (Arsenal): Two early goals set the tone for the Gunners and takes the Dutch superstar onto 14 goals for the WSL season.

ST: Khadija Shaw (Man City): Literally doubled her WSL goal tally for the season in one game thanks to her four-goal haul against Brighton. Now City's joint top scorer in the league.
