To the surprise of many, it was actually Manchester United who started the game with a real verve to their play.
That bright start to proceedings was rewarded within the opening ten minutes when Scott McTominay - a player seemingly blessed with the clutch gene - popped up inside the box to volley home and give the Red Devils a shock 1-0 lead.
While McTominay was getting among the goals, it was his midfield partner Kobbie Mainoo who was really catching the eye.
The youngster dropped the shoulder to drift past Liverpool defenders at will in the first half and, as expected, Man Utd fans were thrilled.
Despite Man Utd's midfield's best efforts, before the stroke of half-time Liverpool would find a way to turn the game completely on its head.
In the 42nd minute the Reds' own midfield maestro Alexis Mac Allister would level the scoring, seeing a deflected effort spin past Andre Onan nad into te bottom right corner of the net.
The goal would spark the end of any defensive shape Man Utd had, with the back four being given the run around a few minutes later in the lead up to Mohamed Salah making it 2-1.
The goal was Salah's eighth at Old Trafford throughout his storied career.
Having wrestled control of the game late in the first half, the visitors then proceeded to thoroughly dominate the second half.
While Man Utd's outfielders struggled to get within five yards of their opposition, goalkeeper Andre Onana was at least playing his part in goal, making a number of saves.
He was a busy man, to say the least.
Despite their dominance and despite how poor Man Utd were however, the Reds weren't able to kill the game off.
And, as it usually does, that failure to kill the game off game back to haunt Liverpool.
In the final five minutes of the game, one of Man Utd's very few forays into the offensive third culminated in under-fire winger Antony fire past Caoimhin Kelleher and into the net.
Amazingly the goal came courtesy of Antony's right foot - a foot we didn't know he could even kick a football with.
Amazingly, Man Utd had anohter chance to win the game just before the final whistle.
After being found with a wonderful lofted through ball from Christian Eriksen, Marcus Rashford, with just the goalkeeper to beat, curling wide of the post with final kick of normal time.
It was quite a bad miss...
Man Utd fan fears that Rashford has missed the chance to win the came seemed to be well placed as, in the first half of extra time, Liverpool retook the lead.
The Reds' third of the game came courtesy of Harvey Elliott's incredibly deflected strike from the edge of the penalty area.
Remarkably, the scoring didn't stop there.
In the 112th minute, Rashford made amends for his earlier miss, capitalising in some poor play from Darwin Nunez in the middle of the park to nab an all-important eqauliser.
With the clock ticking towards a dreaded penalty shootout, Amad Diallo stepped to win the game for Manchester United.
The ex-Atalanta man finished off a sweeping counter-attack in the 121st minute of the game to seal Man Utd's place in the semi-finals.
