Barcelona manager Xavi has confirmed he has held discussions with Robert Lewandowski over his recent dire form in front of goal.

Having scored over 600 goals throughout his storied career, Lewandowski is rightfully regarded as one of the greatest number nines of the modern era. The striker brought his outrageous goalscoring form shown during his 12 years in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich to La Liga with Barcelona last season, firing his new club to their first league title in four years with 33 goals in all competitions.

Lewandowski's goalscoring touch has seemingly evaded him during the current campaign however. The Polish striker has bagged a rather measly eight goals in 20 La Liga appearances in 2023/24, and has failed to hit the back of the net in any of his last six league games.

To make matter worse for Lewandowski, his new understudy Vitor Roque came off of the bench to score the winning goal for Barca against Osasuna on Tuesday, leading to calls for the Brazilian to start ahead of the veteran striker.

Speaking after that game to the press, Xavi discussed Lewandowski's form: “We talked a lot with Lewandowski this week.

"He has to be in the box because he’s one of the best finishers in the world. We have a very important possession game, and he must maintain that position. His goal was disallowed, and he needs to score to regain confidence. He will continue to be important."

The striker will be hoping to finally break his goalscoring duck at the weekend when Barcelona travel to the Estadio de Mendizorroza to face off against mid-table outfit Deportivo Alaves - a team Lewandowski scored a brace against earlier in the season.
