Best Premier League midfielders - 2024/25 power rankings
- Premier League home to some of the world's best midfielders
- Man City's midfield key to past dominance under Pep Guardiola
- 2024/25 season power rankings fluctuates based on form over the campaign
England is no longer a land where box-to-box fiends rule. The era of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard is no more.
Still, that doesn't mean there's been a great reduction in quality. Anything but. Instead, the Premier League is home to a variety of midfield profiles each boasting their own unique brilliance.
The box-to-boxer does remain, only not as prevalent, with press resisters growing in prominence as of late given the desires of teams to win possession back high up the pitch. There's also a glut of outstanding attacking midfielders who have all the keys required to pick whichever lock is placed in front of them.
90min ranks the Premier League's best midfielders based on their 2024/25 performances.
5. Carlos Baleba (Brighton) - New entry
It's been quite the sophomore year for Baleba, who looks destined to be Brighton's next monster sale.
The 20-year-old Cameroonian midfielder is blossoming into something quite special under Fabian Hurzeler. He gained greater recognition for his game-changing performance off the bench against the champions in November but has produced displays of that dominant ilk all season long.
Baleba eats up ground like few others, with his cultured work in possession allowing him to thrive in holding and box-to-box midfield roles.
4. Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa) - New entry
It hasn't been all plain sailing for Rogers, who endured a dip in form before he tore Manchester City apart before Christmas.
Rogers boasts the size and speed to dominate at transitions, but is technically good enough in tight spots to weave beyond defenders and work openings for himself in and around the final third.
While Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran are battling it out to emerge as Aston Villa's leading man up top, Rogers has been a constant operating as a Robin-like figure.
3. Cole Palmer (Chelsea) 🔽
In August 2023, Cole Palmer was thrust into the spotlight as Chelsea plucked him away from Manchester City with the promise of regular football.
Not many backed Palmer to deliver anything close to a 25-goal debut season at Stamford Bridge, nor did many expect him to continue the momentum as the Blues charged into another cycle under yet another head coach.
But Palmer has done just that, proving he's already one of the best attacking midfielders in the world.
2. Moises Caicedo (Chelsea) ⬆️
Caicedo showed signs of life towards the end of his debut season at Chelsea, but the midfielder's game has reached new heights in 2024/25.
Enzo Maresca has made the most of the Ecuadorian's jack-of-all-trades nature, with Caicedo occasionally being used as an inverted full-back. However, his best work arrives in the centre of the pitch.
A proficient duel-winner who's so strong in the tackle, Caicedo has functioned as an elite stabiliser for Maresca's side. He's been critical to the Blues' success this term, and that monster £115m price tag is starting to seem more reasonable with each passing week.
1. Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool) ⬆️
For most of Jurgen Klopp's final season at Liverpool, Ryan Gravenberch was forced to sit on the sideline and patiently wait for an opportunity.
It led many to believe that the former Bayern Munich midfielder just simply wasn't cut out for life in the Premier League, particularly as the unheralded Wataru Endo earned regular minutes.
But under Arne Slot, the Dutchman has found a new lease of life, providing the stability and backbone that Liverpool had sought in failed transfer target Martin Zubimendi.
Gravenberch has emerged as the perfect holding midfielder for the table-topping Reds.
