Real Madrid are preparing to offer left-back Ferland Mendy a new contract after being impressed by the Frenchman's quality in the second half of the season, reports in Spain claim.

Mendy's current deal expires in the summer of 2025 and he had been expected to leave the club this year after failing to convince Madrid's hierarchy of his quality, despite manager Carlo Ancelotti's public and private backing.

Ancelotti even described Mendy as "the best defensive left-back in the world" and is believed to have been encouraging Madrid to re-sign the Frenchman. According to MARCA, he has now been granted his wish.

Madrid officials are prepared to open talks with Mendy over an extension, the report states, although an agreement is not thought to be close at this point.

News of a new contract for Mendy comes amid rumours that Madrid are cooling their interest in a move for Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies who, like Mendy, is approaching the final 12 months of his existing contract.

Having initially been tipped to pursue Davies this summer, reports suggest Madrid altered their stance and are now prepared to wait until his contract expires in 2025 to sign him on a free transfer.

Davies' stock has fallen at Bayern, where he is no longer a guaranteed starter, while Mendy is proving increasingly important to both Ancelotti and Madrid.

Mendy is expected to receive several offers this summer. Clubs from Saudi Arabia have already made contact but the 28-year-old has also been heavily linked with a switch to a number of Premier League sides.

Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal have all been touted as potential suitors, while Bayern have even been tipped to move for Mendy if they need to replace Davies.
