Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga will miss the UEFA Super Cup and the start of the new La Liga season due to a knee injury suffered in training.

The moment was captured on film, and widely shared on social media, as Madrid trained at Warsaw's National Stadium the day before Wednesday night's clash with Atalanta.

The Frenchman appeared to be in considerable pain, having slipped and jarred his left knee. Madrid medics carried out tests on Wednesday morning and were able to allay fears about a long-term absence, but Camavinga will still be sidelined for a number of weeks.

"Following tests carried out today on our player Eduardo Camavinga, he has been diagnosed with a sprain of the internal collateral ligament in his left knee," a statement from the club read.

Such a sprain is estimated to come with a six or seven week recovery timeframe.

It suggests Camavinga won't return to action until late September or early October. During that time, he will be absent for not only the Super Cup game in Poland, but also at least Madrid's opening seven La Liga fixtures against Mallorca, Real Valladolid, Las Palmas, Real Betis, Real Sociedad, Espanyol and Alaves. He could also miss an eighth, with the first city derby against Atletico on 29 September.

Matchday one of the re-formatted Champions League falls within those weeks as well.

Camavinga is expected to play a big role in Madrid's midfield this season, with Toni Kroos having retired during the summer and no direct replacement recruited. His absence could be covered by a combination of Luke Modric and Dani Ceballos, while Jude Bellingham could even begin to operate in a slightly deeper role due to the arrival of Kylian Mbappe up front.
