Chelsea midfielder Melanie Leupolz has agreed to join Real Madrid this summer, according to reports in Spain.

The 30-year-old has been in west London for four years following her arrival from German side Bayern Munich in 2020. Last season, she made 15 appearances under Emma Hayes across the WSL and Champions League, scoring just once in that time.

A report from Spanish outlet MARCA claims Real Madrid are aiming to make significant strides with their squad this summer and have lined up a host of transfers, with the Spanish window now formally open.

The article goes on to state that Leupolz is among their top targets, with the former Germany international already agreeing personal terms with Los Blancos. However, the amount Madrid will have to pay Chelsea for the player has not been reported.

Leupolz extended her contract at Kingsmeadow in January last year with her current deal now set to expire in 2026. Should a move away come to fruition, she will leave Chelsea as a four-time WSL winner, a three-time League Cup winner and an FA Cup winner.

The midfielder has 79 caps for Germany and 13 goals for her national team. She announced her retirement from international football in November last year, a little over 12 months after she became a mother.

For Chelsea, she has made 83 appearances across all competitions throughout her four years in London and has scored 10 goals. Prior to joining Chelsea, she represented both Bayern and SC Freiburg in the Frauen-Bundesliga.

Since Real Madrid’s rebrand in 2020, they have often been the closest challengers to Barcelona in Liga F. Yet, last season, they finished 15 points adrift of the champions in the table, despite claiming second place.

Along with Leupolz, MARCA’s report also names Levante’s Maria Mendez and France international Maelle Lakrar as players expected to join Madrid this summer in what is being described by sections of the Spanish media as a transformative period for the club as they look to bridge the gap to their rivals.
