Ruben Amorim has become the youngest Manchester United manager of the 21st century after inking a deal to replace Erik ten Hag.

Former Portugal international Amorim began his managerial career in 2018 and quickly made waves in his homeland, impressing enough during a short spell with Braga to earn himself a high-profile switch to Sporting CP in March 2020.

Just over four years later, Amorim is taking his talents to the Premier League, having been named the new United manager.

At 39 years and 289 days old, Amorim becomes the youngest manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era and the youngest since Wilf McGuinness took charge in the summer of 1969 at the age of 31 years and 288 days.

United had a number of young managers during the club's early years, but since Sir Alex Ferguson departed in 2013, they have tended to opt for more experience in the dugout.

Amorim becomes United's first manager since Ferguson to be below 40 years old. Interim bosses Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick were both 40, while the youngest permanent manager was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at 45 years and 296 days.
