Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim admitted that it is "clear" there needs to be significant changes in personnel at the club during the summer transfer window and has no qualms about telling players they are no longer of use.

Amorim has spent more than three months at United but is yet to inspire any consistent levels of improved performance. The dogmatic tactician has previously conceded that his preferred 3-4-3 formation may not suit the vast majority of players currently at his disposal, but is adamant that he will not change his approach. That inevitably hints at the arrival of more adaptable players.

In his characteristically frank tone, Amorim explicitly confirmed that changes will come in the off-season.

"We have a lot of games still to play and to talk about [before then]," the Portuguese coach told assembled media this week. "But that is clear [changes are needed]. I think that it is not a difficult situation because everybody understands that in football; sometimes you stay, sometimes you must move on."

United have had difficulty off-loading unwanted assets in the past - and that may be an issue going forward, given Casemiro's apparent desire to stay - but Amorim is confident he can convince certain individuals to move on. "If I know how to explain, I can do it without friction and I like to do it because I wanted to be clear when I was a player," the former Benfica midfielder outlined. "I try to use all that experience.

"When you are honest with someone, they can take it. In the beginning, it is hard, but they will understand. So I'm quite honest with my players and they already know that sometimes they have to move on at the end of the season."

Amorim was thought to be frustrated with United's lack of transfer activity during the winter window. Patrick Dorgu was the club's only senior arrival and has made a decidedly mixed start to his Old Trafford career.

Given the demands of the division's financial regulations - and the club's perilous economic position - United will likely have to sell before they can buy. After enduring what is set to be the worst Premier League campaign in the club's history, Amorim may not have to be too persuasive when it comes to convincing players to leave. Finding buyers for these under-performing individuals could be more challenging.
