Ruben Amorim sends Luke Shaw message after latest injury setback
- Luke Shaw suffered recent injury setback and missed defeat at Arsenal
- England international played in Ruben Amorim's first three matches as Man Utd head coach
- Tyrell Malacia is fit again after missing entirety of 2023/24 campaign
Ruben Amorim says Manchester United will give Luke Shaw as much time as he needs to recover from his latest injury setback.
The left-back was a surprise inclusion in England's Euro 2024 squad and made three appearances in the knockout stages of the competition, starting the final as the Three Lions were beaten by Spain.
Shaw was then hit by knee and calf problems at the start of the 2024/25 season but was fit to make cameo appearances in Amorim's first three matches as head coach after Erik ten Hag was sacked. However, the 29-year-old has since suffered a setback and missed Wednesday's 2-0 defeat to Arsenal.
Speaking after Shaw was ruled out of the trip to the Emirates Stadium, Amorim said: "What I can say since I arrived, I see him in the medical department working a lot in the gym, working a lot on the pitch, we control the load during the games, during the trainings, he was losing weight, so he was doing everything.
"If he continues to do that behaviour, he's a top, top player and we need him. No matter how long he will need, I will be with him, we will help him to return, not just Manchester United but your national team needs a guy like Luke Shaw, so we are here to help him."
As reported by BBC Sport, Shaw has had 75 separate periods of absence that have forced him to miss fixtures since making his professional debut for Southampton at 16 years of age.
Shaw's injury problems over the last year or so were exacerbated by the absence of understudy Tyrell Malacia, who didn't play at all last season after a promising debut campaign in 2022/23. However, the Dutchman is fit again and has started recent clashes against Bodo/Glimt and Arsenal, being substituted at half-time in both fixtures.
Amorim has also given his verdict on the return of teenage defender Leny Yoro, who made his United bow on Wednesday as a substitute after getting injured in pre-season.
