Southampton were condemned to a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

Incoming Saints boss Ivan Juric promised to bring his unique "heavy metal" style to the south coast, but Southampton are still playing the footballing equivalent of easy listening.

A reinvigorated Mikkel Damsgaard breezed through a flurry of half-hearted challenges before sliding a perfectly weighted ball between the red-and-white stripes to tee up Kevin Schade for the game's opening goal after just six minutes.

Brentford's in-form Dane is enjoying the best burst of what had been an underwhelming career, providing a second assist in the space of four days after teeing up the opening goal in the New Year's defeat to Arsenal.

The Bees created a bundle of chances in search of a second, but were denied in the first half by a combination of skewed finishing and Aaron Ramsdale. Sepp van den Berg eventually found the back of the net eight minutes after the restart, sending a thumping header into the bottom corner only for VAR to spot a foul in the buildup.

Juric emptied his bench after watching the Saints produce one of the most woeful halves of football in a season which has produced plenty of contenders for that dubious honour. Yet, the four substitutes that were on the pitch within ten minutes of the restart could do nothing about Bryan Mbeumo's thunderous strike. Dovetailing to devastating effect with his strike partner Yoane Wissa, the sought-after forward blasted the visitors into a 2-0 lead shortly after the hour mark.

Mbeumo nabbed his second and Brentford's third of the afternoon soon after by converting a 69th-minute penalty. Chelsea loanee Lesley Ugochukwu managed to haul Van den Berg to the turf while losing his footing in a comically feeble attempt to defend a cross.

Keane Lewis-Potter and Yoane Wissa added to Southampton's misery with stoppage-time strikes, ensuring that Brentford's first away win of the season was an emphatic one.
