Wolverhampton Wanderers are seeking to move further clear of the relegation zone and pile more misery on Southampton when they clash at St Mary's.

The Old Gold extended the gap between themselves and the struggling newly-promoted trio to six points by drawing with Everton last weekend and victory on the south coast could see them move three wins clear of the drop depending on how Ipswich Town and Leicester City perform.

Victory against Wolves would almost certainly be nothing more than a consolation for Southampton, however, as the south coast side are yet to reach a double-digit points tally this term. They have lost 23 of their 28 matches and still require three points to surpass the lowest points total in Premier League history - Derby County earning just 11 during the 2007/08 season.

Here is 90min's guide to a crunch clash near the foot of the table.

Southampton will be without James Bree but are hopeful of returns for Ryan Fraser, Juan Larios and Ross Stewart. All three are closing in on comebacks but they may have to wait until after the upcoming international break.

Jan Bednarek is expected to be passed fit despite being withdrawn during the first half of Southampton's 3-1 defeat to Liverpool with a head injury. Armel Bella-Kotchap will replace the Poland international if he misses out.

Adam Lallana returned from injury against his former employers last weekend but will not be rushed back into the starting XI given his fitness troubles.

Matheus Cunha is a big absentee for Wolves as he continues to serve a suspension following his FA Cup red card. Fellow forwards Sasa Kaljdzic, Leon Chiwome and Enso Gonzalez are missing through injury.

Wolves welcomed winter recruit Emmanuel Agbadou back into the team last time out but they are still without long-term defensive absentee Yerson Mosquera.

Marshall Munetsi, who scored in the draw with Everton, will be assessed ahead of kick-off after only lasting until half-time against the Toffees following a knock.

Southampton vs Wolves score prediction

Given they have avoided defeat in just five league matches all season, one would be brave to bet against another loss for Southampton on Saturday. They have the worst attack and defence in the division, with few saving graces throughout a weak squad.

Wolves will miss Cunha's ingenuity on Saturday but have shown their ability to earn points in recent weeks. They have won two and drawn one of their last five Premier League matches and have triumphed in their last six battles with the Saints.

Prediction: Southampton 1-2 Wolves
