Switzerland are aiming to make history and reach the semi-final of a European Championship for the first time this Saturday when they face England at Euro 2024.

After easing past reigning champions Italy in the last 16, Switzerland will be confident they can do the same against Euro 2020 finalists England in the quarter-final. Given the disappointing displays of the Three Lions so far, victory for the Swiss would not be a surprise.

Switzerland entered the tournament on rocky ground after a qualification campaign that almost saw manager Murat Yakin dismissed. However, persistence and loyalty has paid off in Germany, with Switzerland having been one of the competition's most entertaining sides to date.

Here is how a familiar-looking Switzerland side could line up against England in Dusseldorf.

GK: Yann Sommer - Gregor Kobel must be cursing his luck, with the recent Champions League finalist still unable to get a game ahead of Sommer. However, the 35-year-old's excellent performances mean he still gets the nod.

CB: Fabian Schar - Having played every minute of every game for Switzerland in Germany, the Newcastle United defender has shown his significance as part of a well-organised backline, featuring on the left side of a back three.

CB: Manuel Akanji - The commander at the back for Yakin, Akanji has been typically classy at Euro 2024. The Manchester City defender is the perfect man to slot into the middle of three centre-backs given his excellent reading of the game.

CB: Ricardo Rodriguez - While a left-back by trade, Torino's Rodriguez has also been a constant for Switzerland at Euro 2024. He will make his 120th international appearance against England, having moved to third in the country's all-time rankings against Italy.

RM: Silvan Widmer - The defender missed the victory against Italy through suspension but should slot straight back into the starting lineup here. He could come up against the tricky Bukayo Saka should England also play a 3-4-2-1 formation, with the Three Lions expected to change systems.

CM: Granit Xhaka - The chief creator, orchestrator and leader for Switzerland, Xhaka has taken his exceptional Bayer Leverkusen form into Euro 2024. Many of England's squad will know him well from his time with Arsenal.

CM: Remo Freuler - A late surge into the box and a beautiful finish opened the scoring against Italy, with Freuler building on his impressive displays on loan at Bologna last term. England will have to stop him running beyond the forward line in Dusseldorf.

LM: Michel Aebischer - Another Bologna star who has made a positive impression for club and country this season, central midfielder Aebsicher has been used on the left of both defence and midfield this tournament.

AM: Dan Ndoye - Guess who Ndoye plays for? Yep, Bologna. The Champions League qualifiers have an impressive cohort of Swiss stars, with Ndoye another to have caught the eye in the final third for his country.

AM: Ruben Vargas - The star of the show against Italy with a fantastic assist and exquisite strike, Vargas is one to watch out for on Saturday. Restored to the starting XI last time out, he will cause chaos just in behind a central striker, often drifting into wide areas.

ST: Breel Embolo - After an injury-hit season, Embolo grabbed a goal in Switzerland's opening victory against Hungary and has started the last two games. His energy and pace could cause England's defence issues.
