Australia women’s head coach Tony Gustavsson has stepped down from his position following their early exit from the women’s football tournament at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

The Matildas finished third in Group B behind the USA and Germany, and results elsewhere meant they failed to progress as one of the two highest-ranked third-place teams.

Australia began their Olympic campaign with a heavy 3-0 defeat to Germany last week, but that was followed by a last-gasp 6-5 comeback win over Zambia at the weekend.

Gustavsson’s side had it all to do in their final clash against the USA on Wednesday night. Trinity Rodman and Korbin Albert gave Emma Hayes’ side a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into the latter stages of the game, though Alanna Kennedy was able to pull a goal back for Australia deep into stoppage time.

However, it was too little, too late for the Matildas as their elimination was confirmed shortly after. Gustavsson then informed the players of his departure following the defeat in Marseille.

"It has been a great honour and privilege to have been able to be the head coach of the Matildas over the past four years," Gustavsson said in a statement. "This journey with the team has had many incredible moments and memories that I will forever treasure."

The Swede took charge of Australia in 2020 and guided the team to a World Cup semi-final 12 months ago in a home tournament. Despite links elsewhere, including to the USWNT, Gustavsson opted to see out the final year of his deal, but that won’t be extended as the Matildas now gear up for a new era.
