Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min looks set to remain at the club beyond the end of this season thanks to an extension option in his contract, a new report has confirmed.

Son signed his current deal with Spurs in 2021, a four-year contract until the summer of 2025, with no mention of a 12-month option divulged at the time.

But the Telegraph report that Spurs do hold such an option and intend to use it. It isn’t mutual and Son only needs to be informed that the clause has been triggered.

What it means is that Son, who joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, will surpass ten years with the north London club. At the age of 32, the South Korean superstar is into the latter stages of his career, but he is still producing the good after scoring 17 Premier League goals last season.

He has three to his name so far in 2024/25 and is on course to reach double figures in the league for the ninth consecutive season, a streak of consistency which began back in 2016.

Son initially struggled when he first arrived at Spurs. He scored or assisted only three times in his first 25 Premier League appearances and was a starter in just 13 league games. It prompted him to ask to leave the club in 2016 after only one season.

"I came close to leaving", Son told the Evening Standard three years later, by which time he was well settled. "I went to the gaffer's office and told him I didn't feel comfortable and wanted to leave for Germany," he added, referencing a conversation with Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino convinced the player it was in his best interest to stay and he bounced back the following season with 21 goals across all competitions, which remains his third best tally in a Spurs shirt. Today, it is 165 goals in 417 appearance for Son, who was made club captain in 2023.
