What numbers can Premier League players wear?
Premier League players have a whole host of choices when it comes to selecting what number shirt to wear, with any number between one and 99 acceptable. Having said that, players generally tend to opt for numbers between one and 40.
The number one jersey is always reserved for a goalkeeper, while players' positions elsewhere on the pitch usually dictate what number they wear. For example, defenders tend to be between two and six, midfielders love the number eight and strikers are normally number nine.
Can Premier League players change squad number?
Premier League clubs must submit a full list of their first-team squad at the beginning of every season, which includes what number they will wear for the upcoming campaign. The deadline this year is 14 September.
Up until that point, players are able to change numbers freely. They don't get the opportunity to do so again until the January transfer window, but even then they are unable to swap numbers with a teammate. They must choose a number that is vacant at the club they play for.
