Eddie Howe has been named as one of England's targets to replace Gareth Southgate after the boss announced his resignation on Tuesday.

After leading England to back-to-back Euro finals, Southgate announced that he would step down from his role as Three Lions boss. Sunday's final fixture against Spain marked his last-ever game in charge of the nation, opening the door for a new manager to take his place.

There's a long list of names under consideration as his replacement, with Graham Potter, Thomas Tuchel, Jurgen Klopp and Newcastle man Howe on the list.

It's not the first time the Magpies boss has been linked with the England job either, with Howe named as one of the candidates to replace Roy Hodgson back in 2016 - before Southgate's eventual appointment.

Asked about the England job at the time, then-Bournemouth boss Howe made it clear he would be interested in leading the Three Lions in the future.

He said: "I'm absolutely committed here. Nothing has changed from the summer. They haven’t come to me and my message is very similar. I am committed here, I love the job. The England job is the ultimate job.

"It's all hypothetical. It's not been a great week for football. It's not ideal the England situation has come up again but I won't get distracted."

Howe has not yet spoken on his ties to the current England vacancy but Newcastle CEO Darren Eales vowed to put up a fight to keep the Magpies boss.

"It is that, speculation," Eales told the media. "Obviously Eddie has been an amazing manager for the club, he's committed to the club with the work that he's done and what he's shown.

"We're obviously committed to him. He had a multi-year extension last summer and we're on an exciting journey. As far as we're concerned, Eddie is the man to lead us on that."
