X reacts as Maguire & Fernandes inspire Man Utd to comeback victory over Blades
- Man Utd trailed 1-0 and then 2-1 during Sheffield Ud clash
- Harry Maguire & Bruno Fernandes helped turn things around
- Rasmus Hojlund added finishing touches to vital win
By 90min Staff

Manchester United avoided embarassment at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, eventually securing a 4-2 Premier League win over Sheffield United despite trailing twice.
Goals from Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund ultimately proved decisive on what briefly threatened to be an awful night in an already difficult season.
Before kick-off, talkng points were focused on United's ongoing injury problems, with Marcus Rashford the latest to be rendered unavailable.
Understand that Marcus Rashford is absent from the Man United squad to play Sheffield United tonight. Picked up an injury against Coventry on Sunday.
— Rob Dawson (@RobDawsonESPN) April 24, 2024
There was a stark realisation about just how few fit players United have.
So… United tonight…

🔘 CM at CB
🔘 RB at LB
🔘 No senior CBs, FBs or STs on bench
Out: Lindelof, Martinez, Malacia, Varane, Shaw, Evans, Kambwala, Mount, Martial, Rashford.
Worse thing is it’s not been far off this state all season. Tough. 🚑
Not everyone was cut up about Rashford not playing though.
José Sá and Mark Flekken have more assists than Marcus Rashford in the Premier League this year 👀

Both are goalkeepers. pic.twitter.com/oH91QF9oMU
Rumours earlier in the day suggested new technical director Jason Wilcox had instructed an immediate switch to a more possession-based style.
- No Rashford tonight
— Martien 🇳🇱 (@MartienBall) April 24, 2024
- Reports saying that Ten Hag HAS to play possession based football starting from tonight
- Eriksen starting means more creativity on the pitch pic.twitter.com/tvL5aAVKOn
Half an hour in, United had 80% of the ball but no goals.
Wilcox asked for possession he gets possession😂

Then, Jayden Bogle somehow gave Sheffield United the lead.
GOAL! Sheff United lead at Man United. Bogle with the goal. 0-1 pic.twitter.com/x8N03yWfs0

Was expecting the goal from a build up mistake. Was coming. Frustrating that it came from Onana who's usually reliable in this regard. But our build up patterns esp against opponents that sit back are just so poor. Clueless passing at the back with poor positions in possession.

Nobody was expecting it.

With only six points on the road all season, the visiting fans couldn't believe it either.
"How s*** must you be? We're winning away" bellow the Sheffield United fans at a stunned Old Trafford

But true Manchester United hero Harry Maguire soon equalised against his boyhood club.

He's on fire right now.
If Harry Maguire continues his form of the last four days for a year, he'll be the first player to win the golden boot with headers only.

Harry Maguire has scored more non-penalty goals (2) in April than:

It's remarkable how he has turned things around too.
This Harry Maguire Redemption Story is one of the best I’ve seen
— 𝙇𝙞𝙖𝙢🇧🇪 (@OfficialVizeh) April 24, 2024
You couldn’t go a day without him being targeted, was booed by his own fans in pre-season
He’s kept his head down, dealt with it and those days feels like a distant memory now
Fair play to him pic.twitter.com/1vTYszb5bM
Maguire’s redemption arc this season has been beautiful to watch
— 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐫 (@UtdEra_) April 24, 2024
Taking the armband away from him has allowed him to go back to basics and concentrate solely on his own game
He deserves his flowers pic.twitter.com/6cJHzPjb4q
Reminder that West Ham tried to buy Maguire and Scott McTominay for £60m last summer.
Can't even imagine how horrendous our season would be without Maguire & Mctominay.

In true Manchester United fashion this season, Sheffield United promptly scored again.
Sheffield United have taken the lead at Old Trafford AGAIN!

No punches pulled.
Heads dropping again. Most of these aren't United players. No Manager will ever make them be either
— Mark Goldbridge (@markgoldbridge) April 24, 2024
There was some confusion just moments later when the hosts had the ball in the net but were awarded what many thought to be a soft penalty instead.
Penalty to #mufc. United scored but seems ref had signalled for a penalty.
— Samuel Luckhurst (@samuelluckhurst) April 24, 2024
i mean it should be a goal but it's not a penalty
— DEM Blades (@DEM_BLADES) April 24, 2024
Imagine he’d given that penalty and VAR had overruled but he couldn’t then give the goal because he’d blown the whistle 🤯
— Annie Eaves (@AnnieEaves) April 24, 2024
Fernandes kept his cool to convert from 12 yards.
Class penalty. That's now 47/51 club penalties scored by Bruno.
— The Devil's DNA (@TheDevilsDNA) April 24, 2024
Genuinely think he's among the best penalty takers in the world if not the best.
Maguire scoring the first goal and then winning the penalty.

Bruno converting the penalty to score our second goal.
My bowl is full.
Have a nice day guys 👍🏼 pic.twitter.com/IoAtqddAtv
A captain's goal put United ahead for the first time on the night.
Fernandes is #mufc's top scorer this season with 15 goals. He was in a fragile state when he left Wembley and shook hands delicately but there was no chance of him missing tonight. If United had 11 players of his talent and mentality they'd be challenging for the title.
— Samuel Luckhurst (@samuelluckhurst) April 24, 2024

What a game Bruno Fernandes is having 👏

One assist 🅰️

Bruno Fernandes has scored or assisted 26 goals this season. Cole Palmer is the only midfielder in the Premier League with more goal involvements (38).
— Statman Dave (@StatmanDave) April 24, 2024
Seriously UNDERRATED right now. ⚽️⚽️🅰️ pic.twitter.com/IHcOjdZVWZ
For good measure, Rasmus Hojlund bagged a fourth.
HOJLUND HAHAHAHA THE GOAT IS BACK
— Trey (@UTDTrey) April 24, 2024
What a ball by Bruno. Hojlund pointing to Bruno celebrating him for the assist. Doesn't look like a side that aren't trying or downing tools.
— Paddy (@OddsOnFPL) April 24, 2024
Hojlund pointing to Fernandes.
— h (@htomufc) April 24, 2024
He’s also played the most passes into him out of any United player, this season.
Needed that Højlund. Confidence player, a lot better anticipation and follows the ball in perfectly.
There was even a nice historic milestone to end the evening.
Ethan Wheatley, the U18s hero from last night’s Premier League Cup win, has replaced Rasmus Hojlund to make his #MUFC debut. He becomes the 250th academy graduate to play for United.
