Xavi Simons is closing in on a loan return to RB Leipzig with a medical booked for next week.

The Netherlands international had been linked with European giants Manchester United and Bayern Munich after helping his nation to the semi-finals of Euro 2024, where they were knocked out by defeat finalists England.

Simons remains contracted to Paris Saint-Germain but Fabrizio Romano has revealed he is set to rejoin Leipzig despite Bayern's interest and late calls from Premier League sides.

The former Barcelona youngster bagged eight goals and 13 assists for the Red Bull outfit last season and then set another three up during Euro 2024 before netting a screamer against England.

He will get the chance to play Champions League football with Leipzig once again with the aim of improving upon last season's last-16 exit to eventual winners Real Madrid. They have managed to convince striker Benjamin Sesko to stick around for another season, while Lois Openda was only outscored by Harry Kane and Serhou Guirassy in the 2023/24 Bundesliga.

Simons returned to PSG in 2023 after the Ligue 1 champions triggered a €6m buy-back clause in his PSV Eindhoven contract. However, he is yet to play for the first-team, having featured 11 times in all competitions from 2020/21 to 2021/22.

Bayern have so far brought in Michael Olise and Joao Palhinha from Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Fulham respectively, while United have been attempting to snare two defenders off the Bundesliga giants.

A double bid for defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui was recently rejected but United remain keen to get a deal over the line. The Red Devils are also hoping to wrap up a loan move for Uruguay international Manuel Ugarte, who only arrived at Parc des Princes last summer.
